The suburb
Living in Albion Park Rail
Albion Park Rail grew up around the railway that reached the district in 1887, about two kilometres east of the old town of Albion Park, and it takes its name from it. It sits between Albion Park and Oak Flats, on the shore of Lake Illawarra near Koona Bay, with the Macquarie Rivulet running through to the lake. In 1899 local dairy farmers built their co-operative central dairy factory here.
Housing is a mix of older homes near the station and the old highway, brick homes in estates such as Green Meadows from around the 1980s, and some newer townhouses. Since the Albion Park Rail bypass opened in 2021, the M1 Princes Motorway carries through traffic past the suburb rather than along its old main road. The suburb also takes in Shellharbour Airport and two volunteer-run museums, one of aircraft and one of light railways.

Shellharbour Airport is owned and run by Shellharbour City Council. Beside it, the volunteer-run HARS Aviation Museum has a Boeing 747 and a Lockheed Super Constellation among its aircraft, and Airshows Downunder, which replaced Wings over Illawarra, is held at the airport every second year. The Illawarra Light Railway Museum runs narrow-gauge steam and diesel train rides on set weekends each month.
Albion Park station on the South Coast Line is here, about a ten-minute walk from the HARS museum. Albion Park Rail Public School is in Gow Avenue. Riana Reserve and Macquarie Shores Reserve sit on the banks of the Macquarie Rivulet, and the Croom sporting complex and Shellharbour City Stadium are just to the south. The motorway has interchanges at Albion Park and Oak Flats.
