The suburb
Living in Cringila
Cringila is a small residential suburb south of Wollongong's centre, bounded by Berkeley, Lake Heights, Warrawong, Five Islands Road and the Port Kembla steelworks, part of which lies inside the suburb. It began as two estates: Steeltown, opened in the late 1920s beside the new works, and Belvedere in the mid-1930s. The name comes from an Aboriginal word for the pipeclay people decorated themselves with before a corroboree.
Post-war migration shaped the suburb. Macedonian, Portuguese, Turkish and Lebanese families settled here to work at the steelworks, and at the 2001 census Cringila was the only suburb in Australia where more households spoke Macedonian than English only. Homes are mostly detached houses on suburban blocks, close to work at the port and the steelworks.

Living here
Close to the works and the hills
Cringila Community Park covers 78 hectares of hills that council bought after residents defeated a plan by BHP to use the land as an industrial waste dump; it is now being regenerated as habitat. On the hills between Cringila and Berkeley, the Cringila Hills Mountain Bike Park has trails, pump tracks, shared walking paths and an inclusive playground.
Cringila Public School is in the suburb, and Cringila station on the Port Kembla branch has trains north through Wollongong to Sydney. Warrawong Plaza is next door for shopping, Lake Illawarra is just to the south past Lake Heights, and Five Islands Road runs along one edge of the suburb towards the rest of Wollongong.
