The suburb

Living in Barrack Heights

Barrack Heights sits inland from Barrack Point, with Warilla to the north and Blackbutt Forest Reserve along its southern edge. It was developed as an estate in the 1960s, with a later stage of lots auctioned in 1962 and the NSW Housing Commission building many of the homes. The name is thought to come from the Dharawal word berrich, meaning swamp.

Most houses date from that period, on suburban blocks, and many have since been renovated or extended, with villas and newer rebuilds among them. Compared with Barrack Point, which is on the water, Barrack Heights is a suburb of residential streets a little back from the coast. First-home buyers and families make up much of the market, looking for a house with a yard near the beach.

Selling

Selling in Barrack Heights

In Barrack Heights the price of a house comes down to the block, the condition of the original home and how far it is from the beach and the reserve. Homes backing onto Blackbutt Forest Reserve and renovated houses on quiet streets draw the most interest. We look at recent sales street by street rather than the suburb median, from our office in Shell Cove.

Renting it out instead? We manage rental homes in Barrack Heights too, where houses in the postcode lease for around $700 a week.
