The suburb
Living in Lake Heights
Lake Heights sits on the northern shore of Lake Illawarra in the City of Wollongong, with Berkeley to the west, Cringila to the north and Warrawong and Port Kembla to the east. The name describes it: the suburb rises from the water, and most streets look out over the lake to the escarpment. Northcliffe Drive is the main road through it.
Most homes are established houses, with villa and townhouse developments added from the 1980s onwards. Because the streets climb from the foreshore, blocks and views change a good deal from one street to the next. Unlike Cringila, which takes in part of the steelworks, or Warrawong with its shopping centre, Lake Heights is almost entirely homes, and the higher streets are where the widest lake views are.

Views over the lake
The lake is the everyday attraction, with parks along the foreshore below the suburb and a shared path that now runs around most of Lake Illawarra for walkers and cyclists. Lake Heights Public School is on Northcliffe Drive, and Warrawong Plaza, with its supermarkets and department stores, is just to the east.
The Cringila Hills Mountain Bike Park and its walking trails are on the hills just to the north, and Port Kembla's beach is a short drive east. The nearest station is Cringila, on the Port Kembla branch of the South Coast Line, with trains through Wollongong to Sydney, and Wollongong's city centre is a short drive north.
