Living in Dunmore
Dunmore is mostly rural: paddocks, farms and the floodplain of the Minnamurra River, with the South Coast Line and the Princes Highway running through it from north to south. It lies west of Shell Cove, across Shellharbour Road. The name goes back to 1865, when the storekeeper George Lawrence Fuller bought land here along the Minnamurra and named it after his birthplace in County Galway.
There are three kinds of home here. Farmhouses sit on working land along roads such as Swamp Road. Dunmore Lakes Estate is a tightly held estate of large homes on acreage blocks, with tennis courts, walking tracks and its own lakes. And within walking distance of Shellharbour Junction station are newer streets of houses, such as Aurora and Celestial Avenues.

Farms, the station and the new hospital
Shellharbour Junction station on Piper Drive opened in 2014, replacing the heritage-listed Dunmore station further south, with trains north to Wollongong and Sydney and south to Kiama. The new Shellharbour Hospital is being built on Dunmore Road near the station and is expected to be finished in 2027. Shellharbour Anglican College is on the corner of Piper Drive and Dunmore Road.
The Shell Cove marina and the surf beaches at Killalea are a short drive east, and Stockland Shellharbour is a short drive north. Working land is part of the picture: there is a hard-rock quarry, sand extraction on the Minnamurra flats, and the low ground near the railway has flooded in heavy rain in the past, which is worth checking for any property on the flats.
