Living in Shoalhaven Heads
Shoalhaven Heads sits at the foot of Mount Coolangatta, between the southern end of Seven Mile Beach and the mouth of the Shoalhaven River, with Gerroa to the north and Nowra to the south-west. Bolong Road is the main way in. The river entrance is often closed by a sand berm, which Shoalhaven City Council keeps low so it can be opened quickly in a flood.
The town is a mix of family homes, weekenders and retirement homes, some looking over the river and others a short walk from the beach. Its population is older than most, a large share of residents own their homes outright, and the holiday park on Shoalhaven Heads Road brings visitors through the warmer months.

Seven Mile Beach and the river mouth
The town has water on two sides. Seven Mile Beach is patrolled in season by the Shoalhaven Heads Surf Life Saving Club on McIntosh Street and has off-leash areas for dogs, and the river has three boat ramps, with beach fishing popular too. The Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club is an 18-hole links course by the sea, and the volunteer-run Native Botanic Garden on Celia Parade is free to walk through.
Shoalhaven Heads Public School is on Ravenscliffe Road, and the town has its own shops and cafes. There is no station: the nearest are Berry and Bomaderry on the South Coast Line, and Nowra, across the river, is the main centre for larger shopping and services. Mount Coolangatta, behind the town, is Cullunghutti to the Jerrinja people, and part of it is protected as the Cullunghutti Aboriginal Area.

Selling
Selling in Shoalhaven Heads
Buyers in Shoalhaven Heads weigh the beach and the river against the practicalities of a low-lying coastal town. Distance to the water, any river or beach outlook, the age and condition of the house and where a property sits on the council's flood maps all bear on price. We price from recent sales in the same streets and work the area from our office at Shell Cove.

Yes. Monique Field Property sells and manages homes in Shoalhaven Heads, about 31 km from our office on Harbour Boulevard in Shell Cove. Book a free appraisal and we'll show you recent sales near you and what we'd expect your home to sell for.
Why is the river mouth at Shoalhaven Heads often closed?
Sand builds up across the entrance and forms a berm, so for long periods the Shoalhaven River reaches the sea only after floods break through. Shoalhaven City Council keeps watch on the berm and cuts a dry notch to keep the sand low, so the entrance can be opened quickly when floodwater rises.
