Living in Gerroa
Gerroa is a small coastal village south of Gerringong, at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, beside the Crooked River and the Black Head headland. The early village was a retreat for religious orders, and the hill above the town still holds pockets of rainforest, with trees such as Illawarra plum, snow-wood and camphorwood.
Many of the homes here look south along the beach to Mount Coolangatta. The village is a mix of holiday houses and permanent residents, many of them retirees, and the population swells at Easter and over Christmas and New Year, when the caravan park by the river fills up and the beach gets busy.

Seven Mile Beach and the Crooked River
Seven Mile Beach runs south from the village towards Shoalhaven Heads, and Seven Mile Beach National Park, reached along Gerroa Road, protects the dunes, a large stand of littoral rainforest and part of Coomonderry Swamp. Black Head is a rock-fishing spot, though it can be dangerous in heavy seas, and many holidaymakers stay at the caravan park beside the Crooked River.
For shops, the primary school and the train, people head north to Gerringong, a short drive up the road, and Kiama is beyond it for larger shops and the electric trains to Wollongong and Sydney. To the south, the road continues to Shoalhaven Heads and on towards Nowra. Outside the holiday weeks, Gerroa itself stays quiet.
