The suburb
Flinders sits between Shellharbour Village, Shell Cove and Blackbutt, on land that was once part of the Bassett-Darley and Towns estates. It is named after Matthew Flinders, who sailed into Lake Illawarra with George Bass in 1796. Building began in the early 1990s, so it is a little older than most of Shell Cove and much newer than the post-war suburbs closer to the lake.
The streets are mostly brick and rendered family homes on suburban blocks, with villas and townhouses in small strata groups among them. Parks and bush reserves run between the streets, and the primary school, with a new high school being built beside it, makes it a family suburb first and foremost. Many buyers here are also looking in Shell Cove next door.

Flinders Public School is in the suburb, and the NSW Government is building a new public high school next door to it on Murray Way, due to take its first students at the start of 2029. It is meant to ease the load on Warilla High School in Barrack Heights, which has been the local high school. Shellharbour Anglican College is close by in Dunmore.
Stockland Shellharbour, the Civic Centre and the City Library are a short drive away in Shellharbour City Centre, and the walking tracks of Blackbutt Forest Reserve are close. The beaches and cafes of Shellharbour Village and the Shell Cove marina are a short drive too. Shellharbour Junction and Oak Flats are the nearest stations, and the M1 Princes Motorway starts at Oak Flats.

Selling
Price in Flinders follows the block and the house more than the view: how close a home is to Shell Cove, the school and the reserves, the size and slope of the land, and how well a 1990s house has been kept or updated. Villas and townhouses sell to a different buyer from four-bedroom family homes. We sell across Flinders from our office in Shell Cove.
As View.com.au reported in January 2024, Monique said family buyers would find better value in the suburbs beside Shell Cove and Shellharbour Village, such as Flinders and Blackbutt.
Renting it out instead? We manage rental homes in Flinders too, where houses in the postcode lease for around $810 a week.
