The suburb
Living in Windang
Windang is the southernmost coastal suburb of the City of Wollongong, on the tip of the peninsula between Lake Illawarra and the ocean, with Primbee to the north. Windang Bridge crosses the lake entrance to Lake Illawarra suburb on the Shellharbour side. The name is an Aboriginal word recorded as meaning scene of a fight, and the point was an Aboriginal reserve from the 1880s until about 1920.
It grew as a holiday place: William Turnbull's Wyndang House, a home and guesthouse, went up in 1920, and through the 1950s and 1960s families camped here every summer. Homes today range from older beach houses to newer houses and units. Buyers include families, retirees and people looking for a holiday home or a place to downsize near the water.

Living here
Between the beach and the lake
Windang Beach sits at the lake entrance with views to the Five Islands, and its foreshore park has barbecues, picnic shelters, a playground and a shared cycle path. Windang Island, just outside the entrance, still has rusted rails and breakwater remains from an 1890s plan to turn the lake into a coal port. Fishing, prawning, boating and windsurfing on the lake are part of everyday life.
Windang Public School is in the suburb, Club Windang, the old bowling club, sits on the lake at Judbooley Parade, and the surf club and Windang Beach Tourist Park are by the water. Wollongong's city centre is about 20 minutes' drive north. Across the bridge, Warilla Grove and Stockland Shellharbour handle the bigger shopping trips.
