North Nowra is on the north bank of the Shoalhaven River, across the water from Nowra's town centre, in Shoalhaven City. The river separates it from Nowra, and the Bomaderry Creek bushland separates it from Bomaderry, so it has bush on one side and water on the other. It is mostly houses on suburban streets, and residents cross the bridges into Nowra for the town centre, work and the hospital.

Bomaderry Creek Regional Park lies between North Nowra and Bomaderry, reached by a short detour off the Princes Highway, with a 5.5-kilometre return walk past sandstone cliffs, caves and remnant rainforest, and glossy black cockatoos in the casuarinas. Nowra's centre, the hospital and the entertainment centre are over the river, and the nearest station is Bomaderry, at the end of the South Coast Line.
