The suburb

Living in Shellharbour City Centre

Shellharbour City Centre is the commercial and civic centre of the City of Shellharbour, and a separate suburb from Shellharbour Village on the coast. It is built around Stockland Shellharbour, which opened as Shellharbour Square in 1982, and the council's Civic Centre on Cygnet Avenue, with Blackbutt and Oak Flats next door. Far fewer people live here than in the suburbs around it.

Most of the housing is recent. Apartment buildings have become more common in and around the centre in recent years, close to the shopping centre and the Civic Centre. They suit people who want the shops, the library and the buses on the doorstep: singles, couples and downsizers, as well as investors who buy to rent.

Shops, the library and the museum

Stockland Shellharbour was expanded in 2012 and 2013 with a Coles, a Kmart and a Myer, and the district also has cinemas, gyms, cafes and restaurants. The Civic Centre, on the corner of Cygnet and College Avenues, has been home since 2018 to the City Library and the Shellharbour City Museum, with a cafe, the council chambers, a civic square and Yirran muru, an Aboriginal interpretive play space.

The TAFE NSW Shellharbour campus is on College Avenue, on the Oak Flats side, and Shellharbour Hospital is a short drive away in Mount Warrigal. Several bus routes serve the shopping centre, and Oak Flats is the nearest station. Blackbutt Forest Reserve is the closest bushland, and the beaches at Shellharbour Village and Warilla are a short drive east.

Selling

Selling in Shellharbour City Centre

Most homes sold in the City Centre are apartments, so buyers compare the floor plan, outlook, parking, the age of the building, strata levies and the building's record. Owner-occupiers and investors both buy here, and what nearby units rent for helps set what investors will pay. We sell apartments in and around the centre from our office in Shell Cove, and we read the strata records before we price.

Renting it out instead? We manage rental homes in Shellharbour City Centre too, where houses in the postcode lease for around $810 a week.
