Living in Bomaderry
Bomaderry is on the north side of the Shoalhaven River, directly across from Nowra, and locals generally treat it as part of the same town. It grew with the railway: the line south from Kiama was planned to continue to Jervis Bay, but when it opened in June 1893 it stopped at Bomaderry and never crossed the river, and the station has been the end of the South Coast Line ever since.
The station building is a 1940s brick replacement for one lost to fire, and the station and yard are on the State Heritage Register. Around it, Bomaderry is mostly residential streets of detached family homes, with the Princes Highway and the bridges into Nowra on its southern side. The Bomaderry Creek bushland separates it from North Nowra.

The station and the creek
Bomaderry Creek Regional Park protects 82 hectares of the creek's gorge, where the water has cut sandstone cliffs, overhangs and caves through remnant rainforest and spotted gum forest. A 5.5-kilometre return walk follows the eastern and western tracks from a grassed picnic area, dogs are allowed on a lead, and glossy black cockatoos feed in the casuarinas. The bushland is of high significance to the local Aboriginal community.
Trains from Bomaderry run to Kiama, where passengers change for Wollongong and Sydney, and a bus meets the train for the trip over the river into Nowra. Nowra's centre, the hospital and the entertainment centre are just across the bridges, and the Princes Highway heads north from here towards Berry and Kiama.
