The suburb

Living in Mount Warrigal

Mount Warrigal is the high ground on the southern shore of Lake Illawarra, with Lake Illawarra suburb, Warilla, Barrack Heights and Oak Flats around it. The hill was known as Native Dog Hill. The land was granted to Thomas Davey in 1821 and farmed for years by the Gorrell family before Hooker-Rex began subdividing it in the 1960s.

The Geographical Names Board objected to the developers' name, since the hill is too low to count as a mountain, but it stuck. Most homes date from that subdivision onward, many renovated or extended to take in the view, with some villas and townhouses. The higher streets look east to the ocean and north and west across the lake to the escarpment.

Living here

Views over the lake and the sea

The lake foreshore along Reddall Parade has small parks, including Boonerah Point Reserve, which residents built with the Warilla-Mt Warrigal Apex Club in 1979, and Burroo Park near Burroo Point. The shared path along the foreshore passes by for walking and cycling, and Reddall Reserve's playground and boat ramp are next door in Lake Illawarra.

Shellharbour Hospital, which opened in 1986, is on Madigan Boulevard, and Mount Warrigal Public School on Hogarth Avenue has taught local children since 1967. Warilla High School in Barrack Heights and Lake Illawarra High School are both nearby. Warilla Grove and Stockland Shellharbour are a short drive for shopping, and Oak Flats has the nearest station and the M1 interchange.

Selling

Selling in Mount Warrigal

On Mount Warrigal, the view drives the price. A house on the high ground looking over the lake to the escarpment, or one on the Reddall Parade foreshore, is compared with very different sales from a similar house a few streets back with no outlook. After that comes condition, and how well a 1960s home has been updated. We sell here from our office in Shell Cove.

Renting it out instead? We manage rental homes in Mount Warrigal too, where houses in the postcode lease for around $700 a week.
