The suburb

Living in Shell Cove

Shell Cove is a planned coastal suburb between Shellharbour Village and Killalea Regional Park, with the Bass Point headland to the east and the Illawarra escarpment on the skyline to the west. Works began in the 1990s and the first land was sold in 1997, so most streets are lined with brick and rendered family homes built since then, with apartments added closer to the harbour in recent years.

The boat harbour at the centre of The Waterfront, developed by Frasers Property with Shellharbour City Council, has changed the suburb. The marina opened in late 2021 and is ringed by a public boardwalk, with a tavern, restaurants and cafes on the water and new homes still going up around it. It draws families and downsizers who want to be close to the water. Our office is on Harbour Boulevard, a short walk from the marina.

Living here

The marina and the beaches

Weekends here tend to revolve around the water: a walk on the harbour boardwalk, a swim at Shellharbour South Beach, which is sheltered from the north-easterlies and patrolled in the summer holidays, or a surf at The Farm or Mystics in Killalea Regional Park next door, both part of a National Surfing Reserve. Golfers have The Links Shell Cove, the council's 18-hole public course.

Shell Cove Public School is on the corner of Killalea Drive and Stradbroke Avenue, and Shellharbour Anglican College is across Shellharbour Road in Dunmore. The nearest station is Shellharbour Junction on the South Coast Line, also in Dunmore, and the M1 Princes Motorway now starts at Oak Flats and runs north to Wollongong and Sydney. For larger shopping, Stockland Shellharbour is in the City Centre.

Selling

Selling in Shell Cove

Buyers in Shell Cove pay for outlook and for distance to the harbour and the beaches, so two homes of the same size a few streets apart can sell for very different prices. Aspect, finish and any view of the water count for more than the age of the house. We price homes here from recent sales in the same pocket rather than the suburb median, and we are based on Harbour Boulevard.

“In Shell Cove, land values are rising because of the marina, the infrastructure, everything that is happening.”

Monique Field, in Illawarra Mercury, January 2023

“The townhouses for example, or the small homes, they always sell. Some may complain, but plenty of people want to buy them.”

Monique Field, in View.com.au, June 2022
