Living in Nowra
Nowra is the main town of the Shoalhaven and the centre of Shoalhaven City, which runs from Shoalhaven Heads down to Milton and Ulladulla. It sits on the south bank of the Shoalhaven River, with Bomaderry and North Nowra across the water. The street plan was approved and the first land sold in 1852, and Nowra was declared a town in 1885.
The river crossing has always shaped it. The 1881 Nowra Bridge, a rare American pin-jointed Whipple truss, carried road traffic for more than 140 years until the new four-lane bridge opened in February 2023. The railway never crossed at all: since 1893 it has stopped at Bomaderry. Housing close to the centre is generally older, with newer streets further out from town.

A river town
Ben's Walk starts at Nowra Showground and follows the Shoalhaven River through bush and along grassy banks, with Hanging Rock looking out high over the water near the start. The showground, above the river on the edge of the centre, hosts the annual Nowra Show in February. The Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Bridge Road has two theatres. Archer, winner of the first Melbourne Cup in 1861, was trained in Nowra by Etienne de Mestre.
Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital, the region's main acute hospital, is on the riverbank about a kilometre from the centre and has been undergoing a major redevelopment. The nearest station is Bomaderry, across the river, at the end of the South Coast Line. The Princes Highway runs through town, north over the river towards Berry and Kiama and south towards Ulladulla.

Selling
Selling in Nowra
Nowra is a large market with a wide range of homes, so we price from recent sales in the same part of town rather than the town median. Buyers look at the age and condition of the house, block size, flood mapping near the river, and how close the home is to the centre, the hospital and schools. We sell in Nowra from our office at Shell Cove, up the coast.
Renting it out instead? We manage rental homes in Nowra too, where houses in the postcode lease for around $570 a week.

What is happening to the old Nowra Bridge?
The heritage-listed 1881 truss bridge over the Shoalhaven River was retired from road traffic when the new four-lane Nowra Bridge opened in February 2023. It is a rare American pin-jointed Whipple truss, and a 2018 decision kept it for reuse as a crossing for people on foot and on bikes.
